DNA databank and DNA profile
What is DNA?
What is a DNA databank?
Why is a DNA databank important for you?
What should you do to join in?
If you want to make use of the DNA storage facility for your pet animal you should
fill in the survey report for dogs or for
cats and print it. With
this form you go to your veterinarian who will take a EDTA-blood sample from your
pet animal.
To enable verification of the identity of your animal you have to bring a copy of the
registration document (e.g. the pedigree). Your veterinarian will check the identity
of your pet animal and will send the copy of the registration document and the signed
registration form together with the EDTA-blood sample to GCS.
GCS will take care of the handling and storage of the sample and will provide you with a
certificate to confirm the storage of the sample in the DNA databank. The sample will be
stored and available to you for a period of 25 years.
If you want DNA profiling as well, you should indicate "DNA-storage"and "DNA-Profile"
on your survey report.
In that case you will get a certificate with the DNA profile of your animal
within three weeks after the sample is received. The certificate with the profile provides
you with a document that gives you the only unique identification of your animal. That
profile will be electronically stored by GCS for 25 years as well.
The costs of taking the EDTA-blood sample and of the verification of the identity of the
animal are not included in the prices of DNA storage and DNA profiling. We recommend
asking your vet to do the sampling when you have to visit him or her for other services
as well.
