Note:
The genetic defect in the MDR1 gene may become life threatening as soon as
affected animals need medication. It is very important for owners (especially
of dogs of Collie breeds and of crossbred dogs related to Collies) to make sure what
the genetic status of their dog is and, in consultation with the veterinarian, to
check the page on "dangerous drugs".
In time we are probably going to find in dogs more than the one known genetic disorder
with clinical symptoms comparable to the ones of the MDR1 defect. The research
group of Dr. Katrina Mealey at the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences of
Washington State University and several other researchers all over the world are
searching for causes and solutions. Through our website we will keep you informed
about new developments on neurotoxic and other genetic disorders.
