A DNA test for Congenital Stationary Night Blindness (CSNB)
What is CSNB?
Congenital Stationary Night Blindness (CSNB) is an inherited abnormality of the
retina characterized by congenital night blindness with various degrees of visual
impairment under phototropic illumination. Vision in affected dogs ranges from normal
day vision to profound day blindness. Along with the visual impairment, affected dogs
have an abnormal electroretinogram (ERG). A night blind dog can have problems ranging
from a slight difficulty in moving around in poor light, to temperament problems caused
by the total loss of vision in a darkened room, to blindness even in light. Until a
couple of years ago, carriers could not be identified unless bred to other carriers.
There is no treatment for CSNB.
